March is Brain Injury Awareness Month: Causes of Brain Injury

Two types of brain injury are Traumatic brain injury and Acquired brain injury

Traumatic brain injuries are :

  • – Assaults and Domestic violence
  • Shaken baby syndrome
  • – Motor vehicle accidents
  • – Firearms
  • – Falls
  • – Sports accidents

Acquired brain injury or non-traumatic brain injuries are:

  • Brain tumors and intracranial surgery
  • – Seizure disorders
  • – Lack of oxygen to the brain
  • – Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Stroke or aneurysm
  • Lyme disease & other diseases
  • Bacterial infections
  • Meningitis
  • Additional causes of Acquired brain injury and TBI click on the link:
    • near drowning
    • choking
    • injuries in which the chest has been crushed
    • electrical shock
    • lightening strike
    • trauma to the head or neck
    • blood loss
    • artery impingement
    • shock
    • heart attack
    • stroke,

    • vascular disruption
    • infections diseases
    • intracranial tumors
    • metabolic disorders
    • meningitis
    • some venereal diseases
    • insect-carried diseases
    • AIDS
    • hypo or hyperglycemia
    • hepatic encephalopathy
    • uremic encephalopathy
    • seizure disorders
    • toxic exposures to chemical and gases

    hmmm i never thought of my seizure disorder as a TBI…

    Don’t forget Lyme disease and other nasty bacterial infections as a cause of Acquired Brain Injury!

    I don’t know that you would call what I have a brain injury, it just acts like one…Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. No I don’t have a tumor, just the symptoms.

    I’ve also had a blow to the back of my head that caused me to lose consciousness. I was told I had a severe contusion…and I had a hairline fracture of my 7th Cervical Vertebra. I was never told I may have a brain injury. I went through a lot with the recovery from that and still have pain in that area…plus arthritis in the cervical area.

    as you’ve said….oh what they don’t tell you.
