Laughter as Brain Injury Medicine … Silly comments or questions

17 Apr

Have you laughed today?  Many times we say things that are innocent but don’t realize how silly they sound.  Two of my favorites I have listed below.  One is just a silly question while the other is a repeated question every time something is missing.

I recently left my dog for a couple hours in the care of another.  While gone I was told my dog barked the entire time!  I listened then I was asked “Does he always bark while you are gone?”  My reply was “How would I know if I am not home?”

Whenever I forget where I left something I am always asked “Where did you leave it last?”  That is a loaded question!  If I knew where I left it last I would know where it was at!

What statement or question have you heard recently that has caused you to think about the things we say, and you end up laughing?

I think we always have something silly to say, and don’t realize what we’ve said till after the fact. Hey, at least we can all laugh at it! It’s a sad state of affairs when everything we say is criticized … that’s when we walk away from those relationships and begin living again! Take care and stay safe, Edie

When somebody asks me what is the worst problem from my brain injury, I respond, ” I forget.”

This is a great one! I notice when someone asks me an open ended question and I can’t think of the answer I spontaneously answer “I don’t know” which in fact I do, but I think it’s a way of confabulation and later I realize how I answered! Goofy how brain injuries are, anyway I love your answer “I forget!” … that’s the best response to how brain injury affects one! Take care and stay safe, Edie

I love your laughing man photo! That alone made made me laugh! Your examples of inane comments are good. My contribution is from a little different sector, but when stress is high and things aren’t going well, like a family illness or something requiring a great deal of attention, I go a little crazy when someone says, “I hope you’re taking care of yourself.” What does that even mean? LOL! I need to see it as funny and not be annoyed. I enjoyed the chuckle, Edie!

It’s interesting how everyone’s perception is different, and with communication do we ever know the really meaning? Thank you for sharing. Take care and stay safe.
